These are all great! The first from the second set is my favourite, such a rare angle.

That was a young cowbird that had not yet learned to fear humans and just hung around the porch looking for hand outs.

Couldn't have been more than 20 feet away.

Yes - a classic Nuthatch pose. My great niece calls them the "upside down bird".

Are you still doing bird photography? I thought your work was very good. Working with a 200mm even with a TC is a challenge on most birds. But it can be done. I know someone who does stunning work with a 400mm Canon prime on larger birds. He uses a blind.

Can't say for sure. These are old files so I don't always remember. I don't use conventional telephotos, but scopes, so the exif info is no help.

I know the last one in the first group, the Red-bellied Woodpecker, was taken with the 560mm APO triplet. For sheer raw optical quality this is my best glass. Not much magnification (about 16x) but it has resolving power to burn. It easily out resolves the sensor on the K20D. BTW these were all taken on the old DL with the 6mp Sony sensor not the K20D.

Here's a shot of the glass I use.
From left to right:

1000mm FL 120mm objective achromat (30-60x)
620mm FL 100mm objective Pentax spotter (38x with Pentax DSLR camera adapter) I think the first shot in the first group was taken with this setup.
500mm FL 100mm objective achromat (15x)
560mm FL 80mm APO triplet (16-30x)

Here's a shot taken with the 560mm triplet and the DL:
Scarlet Tanager

Wildman,

Beautiful Pictures. The detail is spectacular!!!

I noticed that on the long glass you have red dot sights added. How do you attach the sights to the lens? I have just purchased a BSA RD30 and was thinking of mounting it in the hot shoe of my camera with a homemade adapter. If you could PM me with any details I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Lou

I just buy one of the low flat weaver mounts (there are many styles that will work) and drill right through the scope tube and use the self-tapping screws that come with the mount.
Works perfectly. The scope tubes are just a fancy painted piece of stove pipe.
