DA 35/2.8 Samples [8 IMG]
Posted By: Sailor, 03-04-2009, 12:07 PM

Here is an eclectic group of shots taken over the last few days with my new DA 35Limited. None are even remotely keepers, but they do give an idea of how the lens behaves at various f-stops. All of the close ups were taken hand-held and really should have been done with a tripod (but I was too lazy to drag it out).

Overall, I'm reasonably impressed with my DA 35: it appears pretty sharp, particularly at f/4, f/5.6 and f/8; it generally focuses fast although barrel travel can take a while if AF lock is lost; and it does have macro capability, although I personally think the FL is inconveniently too short for use as a dedicated, tripod-mounted macro. I think it'll work well as a travel lens that combines good optical performance with a "normal" FOV and close-focusing capability for occasional use.

Hibiscus from Behind - ISO 100; 1/750 @ f/2.8:

Phoney Flowers (unfortunately hand held) - ISO 400; 1/45@f/5.6:

Pitcher - ISO 100; 1/45@f/11:

Dusty and Phoney Berrie - ISO 100; 1/45@f/5.6:

You are definitely changing your shooting style and it is a very good change. I love your photos here as they carry the beauty of pentax glass as well: good contrast and mood!

You flatter me, James. I am pleased with the lens.

Love the shots, love that lens. In fact I just posted a similar thread a couple days ago entitled Singing the praises of the 35mm LTD macro. It's just such a versatile performer, and so compact too. I showed it to a Canon guy at Ojibway the other day and he marvelled at the build quality.

Nice rich colors; was that PP'd in or coming out of camera?

Thanks, Rob. I guess I missed your series. And, yes indeed, the lens is a cutie.

Thanks so much. These shots were taken RAW and exposure was either unmodified or, in a few cases, very slightly adjusted prior to direct conversion to JPEG.* Some of the JPEG files were cropped, all were of course resized and then sharpened.

Jer

*With my K20D, I find I'm having to do very little exposure/contrast adjustment.

Thanks much for the nice comment. Based on what I've seen thus far, I'm betting you're going to enjoy yours. I'm likely to go to a car show on Saturday - just the place to try this baby out beyond the house and back yard.

I love this lens! As much as I love my zooms, this is the lens that is almost always on my camera. I'd even go as far as to say the Macro designation is a little misleading. Yes, it does 1:1 macro and does it superbly, but it really is a "do everything" lens. It's at the point to where I expect to get up one morning and it'll have breakfast on the table...
