Hike to a hut (4 imgs)
Posted By: mikebob, 04-03-2007, 02:38 PM

On Friday I left town (Denver) with a couple of buddies for a hike to McNamara Hut. This hut is in the 10th Mountain Division hut system and is located just above Aspen. Our hike to the hut was about 7.5 miles, in deep snow with around 2000 feet of verticle. Of course I brought the K10D

This picture is of the Maroon Bells, probably Colorado's most photographed high peaks (Fourteeners in local dialect), from about half way up the trail.

Here's the hut. What a slice of heaven after an absolutely grueling hike in!

From part way up Bald Knob, a view of the texture of the nearby mountains. This shot looks completely unreal to me, but that is what it looked like.

Finally, me and my gear (about 55lbs worth) on the way down after 3 days of backcountry joy.

We ate at the Capital Grill in Golden on the way home. That was the best burger I've ever had, well at least since the last long hike

The K10D was awsome! Just thought I'd share! I have a lot more, and will get them post-processed eventually.

The shot of the ridge lines is fantastic. It's been a real long time since I've done any winter camping. Nothing like a long slog on snowshoes to whet the appetitie! And your scenery is pretty spectacular!

beautiful, thanks for sharing.
I wish that I could have joined you

It looks like pretty firm snow. How are your snowshoes in powder?

The snowshoes work great in all but the deepest powder. We were lucky that a big dump of snow was on top of a thick sun crust, so we only sank about 6-9 inches. At least until we broke through, then I was up to my hips from time to time. Fun stuff indeed!

Beautiful shots. The first and third are very nice and clear. It must have been a clear day. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers

Thanks Mike,
snowshoeing is just about my favorite thing during the winter
I just use a set of MSR's with 8" flotation tails. I'm usually shin deep then. Anything less and I'm usually up to my hips where I live.

I agree 100%... snowshoeing is the best. My shoes are Atlas 1080, which work great for winter climbing of our high peaks as well, i.e. they are wider rather than longer and have angled spikes for traversing steep slopes.

Next time though, I think using my telemark skis with skins would be the way to go. At least the way down would be very quick!

Thanks for looking!

That's not a hut - it's a mansion, compared to the ones in the mountains here! (The real huts that is, not the touristy ones).
