Ozark Ice Storm 2009
Posted By: sajmmiller, 03-05-2009, 03:13 PM

Here's a few shots taken during the unprecedented ice storm Arkansas experienced in January. We had a little over an inch of ice which resulted from freezing rain. Some areas to the East of my location had up to three inches of ice. We were without power for a total of five days, but many people experienced much longer outages. Destructive, yes, but beautiful too.

Maple tree bent over double, lit by sodium vapor street light

Large tree top

Tree limbs

Ice formations on fence boards

Ice buildup surrounding individual blades of grass

All of the above were taken with the Tamron SP AF90mm macro 2.8. Many more in my Zenfolio gallery, some with the DA 55-300:

Nice shots, Scott! 3 and 4 are my favorites.

Where 'bouts in NWA? My inlaws live on Beaver Lake near Garfield. They were without power for a week or so.

Marc Languille (sp?) also lives up your way. Do you two ever cross paths?

Ditto ^ ^ Tho not in Queensland

I just love the first shot. I'm not sure if it's the lighting from the street lamp but the golden colours of it are just beautiful, gives it an ethereal quality.

And I still can't believe that those poor little blades of grass were encased in so much ice. Mother Nature does some amazing stuff!

Your first photo looks surreal and is my favorite. #4 and 5 are also very good.
I generally am not a fan of sodium vapor street lights, but in this case the color seems to give the surreal look you mentioned. Glad you liked them...thanks for your comment!

I never stop being amazed in front of phenomena like that! I really love this series, the last two photos being my favourites!
Georg,
It was pretty amazing. Freezing rain is not uncommon here, but the amount for one rain event was unusual. Some of the ice formations, like in the last two photos, I've never seen before. Glad you liked them.

Very nice images of a not so nice situation, I really like number two and four.
Heinrich,
Thank you. I'm glad to hear that you liked number two which was one of my favorites. "Crystaline Entity" is the title that comes to my mind on that one.

Thanks Russ! I'm in Springdale about one mile North of Lake Fayetteville.

Marc and I have tried to meet up a couple of times, but so far, we've not been successful. I'm looking forward to meeting him one of these days.

Thank you Kris! I'm glad you liked them, and like you, I am amazed by what Mother Nature sometimes throws our way.

Hi Gary,
Glad you liked them. "Deadly beauty" is a great way to put it! For this California boy (me), the weather here is always interesting.
