Ozark Ice Storm 2009
Posted By: sajmmiller, 03-05-2009, 03:13 PM

Here's a few shots taken during the unprecedented ice storm Arkansas experienced in January. We had a little over an inch of ice which resulted from freezing rain. Some areas to the East of my location had up to three inches of ice. We were without power for a total of five days, but many people experienced much longer outages. Destructive, yes, but beautiful too.

Maple tree bent over double, lit by sodium vapor street light

Large tree top

Tree limbs

Ice formations on fence boards

Ice buildup surrounding individual blades of grass

All of the above were taken with the Tamron SP AF90mm macro 2.8. Many more in my Zenfolio gallery, some with the DA 55-300:

These are great, especially the first image. But I also really like the last two images.

I think #1 is the best of the bunch - all are good. Hopefully most of the trees will survive.

great pics especially the first and last. I also love ice pictures but find getting from place to place a bit risky w/ a camera... wish I played golf so I could wear those shoes for traction!

Thanks for looking and commenting Scott. We got a substantial warm up about the time the power came back on.

As someone who moved to Arkansas from the desert, I know what you mean. The weather here never ceases to amaze me. Glad you enjoyed the pics.

Hi Dave,
Glad you liked them. The trees are in pretty bad shape...so many split limbs and trunks. The next worry is disease, drought, and fire.

Wayne,
Thank you for commenting! Your dad was fortunate.

Glad you liked them. Golf shoes are a great idea! A light layer of sleet on top of the ice made walking a little less treacherous; we didn't drive anywhere until things melted.
