The moon actually has colour to it, if you do a google you will see that its not a grey hunk of rock at all.

Woah, that's amazing. How come most photos reveal it to be gray though?

I was going to ask a similar question....what is the difference in the two photos...is one colour and one B&W?

One is more or less how it comes out the camera, the other is the same shot but with saturation pushed to limit and then settings tweeked to get the best colour rendition. Take a look at this one for a real moon shot (not mine).

It is not a real Moon shot but enhanced beyond what the human eye can reveal. The background stars are from an other photo and Moon was superimposed on top. Its not possible to achieve such effects in one image due to the magnitude(brightness) difference between the stars and Moon. It would be the same as trying to take a night photo with a 1000 watt bulb 15 feet from the lens and expect to clearly see every details of the background. To make it simple, calculate the speed of exposure for the Moon and the star, Moon should be depending on focal length around 1/180 at f4 while at the same "f" setting the star would take 30 to 60 seconds. Nice effect but totally beyond reality.

Both correct actually. It is a "real" moon shot, with its actual colors brought out by extreme color pp enhancement. Background is artificial superimposed for artistic effect.

The original, marathon thread, and links to others similar (such as a full moon version, awe heck here it is) is from here What Color is the Moon, Really? - dslreports.com . Explanation of the science behind it: APOD: 2006 February 16 - The Color of the Moon

Denis is correct. If you enhance a photo of the moon, you will see the slight blue refractive nature of the volcanic Titanium in some of the Moon's basins. But as a whole to the human eye the moon is a gray brown colour that is uniform across the surface. The blue tint might show up if the reflected sunlight is just at a perfect angle.

As Denis says, you can't expose the stars and moon like this in a single shot.

Here's 1000mm shot I took last fall with no PP enhancements or cropping.
