Marbles are hard
Posted By: dbh, 04-06-2007, 12:04 PM

... to light. I've been trying to capture the colours and textures frozen in the glass of my 3 paperweights. The problem becomes one of trading off bright illumination with distracting reflections:

Lit directly from above with off-camera flash and diffusing white paper:

A lower camera angle and bounced flash up close:

WOW! I really like those, especially #2.
What size is the "marble" and what lens?

Thanks. They are about the size of a baseball. The lens is a Tamron 90mm f2.8 I bought new a few weeks ago. Manual focus, f32 1/125s.

I think you pretty much nailed it with the second one. Very nice indeed!

Something to like about all of them...

Hi DBH!

I like the little sub-world in the bubble at the front in #1, although the whole image could be a little lighter.

As others have said, #2 is just outstanding!

I really like the blue, green, and purple ribbons in #3. They seem velvety.

Cool photos all around!

I like the modern art feel to the first shot, almost looks like a Kandinsky painting. I like the lighting of the second shot but the camera angle of the third, if you could combine the two it would be super great! All in all very nice shots.

Yes I like that little bubble world, too. It reflects more of the internals of that glass object that are outside of the crop. I suppose I could have lightened it with the curves - might just try that. I tend to be rather timid and light-handed when it comes to post-processing. It wasn't shot in raw either so I guess I threw a bunch of possibilities away. Oh well they are just sitting up on the bookshelf; easy to try a few more experiments some day.

Na+(aq)/Cl-(aq):
I tried what you suggest and got a lot of hot spots and dark spots. Mayhap I need more strobes than just the one. And another helping of patience.

Everyone:
Thanks all for the encouragement and thoughts.

I did some tweaking:

I like it better.

#2 worked the best for me, although every shot in this set is nice.
