I have been systematically avoiding reading any threads about HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography because well, it sounds complicated and involves using layers and such, which scare me.
Nevertheless, last night i read this article and decided to try it:

I shot two night images of my house, one overexposed and the other underexposed. My captures weren't great due to some massive lens flaring from the street light (forgot the hood - DOH!), but by the time i got inside and realized this, it was too late.
Using the instructions in the article, i layered one image over the other and began "painting" one into the other. It was slightly laborious, but the results were pretty cool.
Here is a split screen of the two starting shots showing the nice blue sky in the underexposed shot and the blown out porch lights of the overexposed shots. Neither looks very decent:
