Life can be incredibly small
Posted By: xs400, 03-15-2009, 09:34 PM

This shot was taken using the Vivitar Series 1 105mm macro + a 25mm extension tube. When I looked in the viewfinder, I could not believe I was looking at a bug sitting on the flower. By eye, it looked like a spec of dirt, only with the high magnification of the macro was I able to see it was a bug.

Here's another flower shot without the bug. These flowers are less than 1 inch in diameter.

Indeed one has no sense of scale on these shots (the bug helps) - excellent macros.

Dave, you are correct, there is no sense of scale. My wife said I should have put my thumb in the picture to give it scale. Those flowers are about the same width as my thumb. So the bug would just be a spec if it was seen sitting on my thumb.

Great shots! You have amazingly wide DOF in the first image, considering the magnification! What aperture did you use?

Thanks Georg. For the first shot, I used f/22 to get the wide DOF. I also used a tripod since exposure was 1/10 at iso 400.

Love the colour and contrast in the second one.
That's got to be the smallest bug around...

Thanks Jim, I guess the photography class I am currently taking has helped to improve my technique.
