Pine Grosebeak and Pine Siskin
Posted By: 8540tomg, 03-21-2009, 10:09 AM

The birds have been fairly cooperative today. I'm pretty sure the first one is a Pine Grosbeak. Ornithologists confirm it if you will. I'm positive #2 is a Pine Siskin. Lens: M400/5.6.

Thanks Scott,

They can be a bit difficult. I didn't quite nail them but I'm getting closer. I needed a little more sun to get the speed and dpth of field. MAybe next time.

Thanks Dave,

Last batch of the day. The Siskins posed nicely - must be the free food.

I have house finches, a bunch of different types of sparrows, goldfinches and warblers at my feeders these days. But that first shot here sure looks like my house finches. The first shot you posted sure looks just like the male house finches in my yard...but maybe I have Pine Grosbeak and I don't know it?

I think you are correct BPT and LaRee. I just re-checked my Peterson Field Guide and it probably is a Male House Finch.

Yep male house finch. Good job. Keep at it. Bird photography can be fun, challenging, and expensive.

Hey Tom, I meant to say that the Siskins are cute little birds. I don't see them around me that I know of anyway.
Last year for the first time I had a Spotted Towhee visiting my yard to eat the seed that falls to the ground from the hanging feeder. They are pretty skittish, but my goal is to get a good shot of that bird sometime this season. I saw him again for the first time day before yesterday, so I have a few weeks to try and get a shot before he moves on.

LaRee,

I checked a range map for the Pine Siskin and it indicates San Diego may be a bit south of their breeding range. It alo indicates they might winter in the area so you might see them from time to time. Year round residents here in S. Ontario.

Thank you for the information Tom. I'll have to keep an eye out for them, although I would think they'd be east and not on the coast if they were in the area.
