12 Hours of Sebring
Posted By: two68s, 03-23-2009, 10:24 AM

Here are some pics from the ALMS race at Sebring International Raceway on Saturday. I took about 1500 photos, narrowed them down to 250 then took the cream off the top of that. I think some of them turned out really great. Let me know what you think, and don't hold back. I am trying to learn after all!

This is a great racing series, differentiating itself from others by showing behind the scenes static shots of support roles and ending with an extremely well executed panned shot of a racing car, for which all the support stuff is necessary. I'm very impressed by this notably thoughtful approach to the subject.

Thanks Sailor, although the majority of my photos were panning action shots (practicing panning was my main goal) I did try to express what an endurance race is all about. A tremendous amount of support is required to keep a car competitive for 12 hours straight. I did find it hard to capture multiple cars in one shot. Being an endurance race, they seem to spread out into a steady pace pretty quick.

That first Corvette panning shot is spectacular.

One of the best races at one of the best tracks--wish I was there.

Thanks! I was completely in awe by the C6R vettes. They finished #1 and #2 in their class. The 7.0 Liter big block definitely screams coming down the track. To say they have a distinctive sound when compared to the other cars is an understatement.

Rumors are they will be switching to a smaller engine to even up the competition.

Here are the best shots of the C6Rs:

Drivers: Jan Magnussen/Johnny O'Connell

Drivers: Oliver Gavin/Olivier Beretta

Lucky! you got to see the greatest P1 car ever created, in its debut race. Happen to have anymore pics of the Audi R15 or Tom Christensen? I really wanted to make it down there this year to see Audi unvail its new car, but hopefully I will be able to make it next year or maybe even go to the real Le Mans. Great pics! what lens if you dont mind me asking.

I did get a couple shots of the R15s, these were the hardest to get sharp photos of. The camera seemed like it had a hard time focusing on the profile of the P1 & P2s. Plus, they're ridiculously fast. On top of that you can't hear them coming, the twin turbos keep that V10 diesel down to a low hum.

The #2 McNish/Capello/Kristensen car

All of the panning shots were taken with a Quantaray branded Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6, mostly at the wide end of the lens. The pit and paddock shots were a mix of 70-300/18-55

Yeah, I got to see them at the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta 2 years ago--got a shot of the 2nd team vette in the esses and got it into the PPG.

I've already started planning the trip!!! I'll be able to make 3 ALMS races this year, in two weeks is the Honda Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, FL which is about an hour from me. We also have a brand new world class track and facility back home in Birmingham, AL. I'm hoping we can attract a big time road racing event there in the near future.

Very nice series. I'm getting geared up for the first race of the F1 season this coming weekend so I'm getting a kick out of these pictures.
