New Magnolias in Black and White
Posted By: Asad_Masede, 04-08-2007, 01:38 PM

Not too much to say here other than that they're finally out and the first set I ran across and shot was more suited to B&W than it was for colour; mainly because of the lighting.

Bibble Pro for a RAW converter and everything else (B&W also done in Bibble Pro), no USM or anything done after conversion. I'm quite impressed with Bibble, especially their latest Linux version, it's rock solid unlike their last release which crashed on me more than a few times.

Anyway enjoy, state your favorite and of course, C&C is welcome and appreciated!

I'm having fun with high-contrast B&W.

Cheers!

flowers are difficult in black and white as flowers by nature represent pure colours to us. Yours are pretty good with satisfying contrasty tonal range. Composition is best in 3 and 4.

I like the 3rd one the best. I wondered what the coloured version of the 3rd shot might be...

I missed magnolia the best, only flowering for 2 weeks usually. Not much colour for the autumn here in Melbourne

Yep, flowers definitely are difficult in B&W, and even harder to appreciate them that way. Thanks, glad you like these.

Cheers!

Thanks! I'll post the colored version soon. Yeah Magnolias come and go fast, I need to find some different colored ones.

Cheers!

First one is beautiful. Some years ago I passed up an opportunity to buy a beautiful B&W flower print by a photographer named Kenro Izu. Still kicking myself about that one. They are, as you say very difficult to get right. You might want to try toning them; the platinum prints that I have seen sorta seem to glow.

I'd be kicking myself too...

I'll definitely try toning with these, thanks for the tip and the compliment!
