Immature black crowned night heron. Could also be imature yellow crowned night heron, they are pretty similar.

In my opinion, the yellow crowned have darker eyes

Very nice shots and don't feel bad. I'm not a bird guy but I do shoot some bird pictures. Some birds I know but many are just a yellow bird or gray bird.

Pretty sure yours is an immature Black-Crowned Night Heron. That is what the sign said at the exhibit that I took this picture.
