FA77/1.8 at the Australian War Memorial
Posted By: jthommo, 03-27-2009, 11:57 PM

The 77 really shines under subdued light. Or anywhere, really.

Polly the Kittyhawk

De Havilland DH9 of Parer and Macintosh - they completed the 1919 London - Sydney air race in this contraption.

An old chap was wheeled over the projection of the Japanese Imperial flag; he probably fought the Japanese in New Guinea all those years ago.

This old bloke walked along the wall of remembrance for ages before he finally found the name he was looking for.

Thanks

Those are great photos. you did a great job, brings out alot of emotion.

I thought I was done buying lenses at least for a little while. Last night I was shooting an event in really poor lighting and both the 31 and fast fifty were to wide and the tamy 28-75 was just a little slow for the action even at ISO 3200, I think the 77 would have been just right.

So once again I say thanks, I promise I won't tell my wife who you are.

Thanks James! I find myself spending more time here as DPreview seems overrun by unpaid forum policemen and the constant banning of my friends. This place seems much more tolerant.

Whew!

As well as being a fast little telephoto, the 77 renders things so wonderfully. It is my best lens by miles.

The story of Polly

from the AWM website:

By August 1942 the Kittyhawk aircraft known as “Polly” had arrived with No. 75 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, at Milne Bay on the far eastern tip of Papua. “Polly” was the regular aircraft of Flight Lieutenant Bruce “Buster” Brown, and was flown in the defence of Milne Bay. Brown named it “Polly”, after his girlfriend.

During late 1942 the Kittyhawk was damaged several times while fighting Zeros. On 14 April 1943 “Polly” was flown by Squadron Leader Wilfred Arthur against the last major Japanese air attack on Milne Bay. Although Arthur’s guns failed after take-off, he still led his pilots into action. He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his bravery. Soon after, “Polly” was retired from service and ended up at an RAAF school at Flemington race course.

Buster Brown with Polly.

A couple of years ago one of Polly's pilots - I think it was Buster Brown - was reunited with Polly at the War Memorial. I'll try to find a photo.

I'd like the last one if only the gentleman in the picture were in focus. I think he's the subject of the photo, not the wall. I guess it's a matter of taste. Nice try though.

Yes, he is a bit oof - I thought the mood of the photo made it worth posting though.
