The Old Shed
Posted By: Derridale, 03-31-2009, 02:48 AM

Seen beside the Newell Highway in New South Wales, Australia, about an hour before sunset. Couldn't resist stopping and taking the shot.

Pentax K20 at f/11 and 1/250, handheld, with Tamron 18-250 lens and Polarizer.

Shot as RAW and exported from Aperture as JPG, with only a tiny amount of sharpening as the only processing.

I did try to clone out the power cable at top left, with the two birds sitting on it, but the blue of the sky is so intense that no matter how hard I tried, it left a discernible streak where the cable had been, so I left it in.

I think you have some pretty good colours there, especially in the yellow-brown grasses, which are a nice counterbalance to the blue sky. If you can, try and get another shot and leave out the fence in the foreground.

Thanks for the comments

I can't really go back and take another shot - it's about 1500 Km from home...! But we did stop for about 15 minutes and had a cold drink out of the cooler box in the back of the Landcruiser, and I did take a few more shots at the time, including this one taken about 10 minutes after the one posted above. It's not a crop - it's another photo. I took about 10 in total.

Note the subtle changes in the colourings, in the typical Aussie sunset lighting conditions in the bush.

And yes - the same two birds sat on that wire the whole time we were there...! I don't THINK they were stuffed....

Again, a straight export of RAW from Aperture, with a slight sharpening only.

Very nice - I don't think the power line takes that much away - and what the heck is it powering at this point ? haha

Like Dave, I don't think the power line distracts at all - it's part of the scene. This shot is beautifully done - shows what the 18-250 can do under the right conditions and in the right hands. Great job.

Thank you all for the comments

It's great to get feedback - photography CAN be a very isolated hobby, if it weren't for forums like this one, along with a bunch of good folks who are prepared to share opinions and advice.

Much appreciated.
