From my broken K10D and Bigma.....
Posted By: Heinrich Lohmann, 04-03-2009, 06:01 PM

....a couple of birds. My K20D and 16-45 are not back from Pentax yet, so yesterday I dug out the K10D (Pentax wants $350.00 to fix whatever ails it) put Bigma on and went outside.

Comments are always welcome and appreciated.

Doesn't look broken to me! I'd smooth/NR the background a bit on the second shot and add a little selective sharpening to the bird, but it's a damned good shot as it is.

I don't know what's wrong with the K10, but you're certainly doing well with it. I use the K10/Bigma combination myself, and it does the job very well. Nice shots!

Very nice captures Heinrich. I'm so sorry your K20d problems are dragging on so long. It must be painful.

Thank you for the kind words, the "broken" is mostly W/B and exposure issues.

Take care,

Thank you for the kind words Michael, I had a look at your galleries, pretty nice.
As for the broken K10D: Last fall on the second day of a 10 week road-trip I fell and the K10D and attached Bigma went down with me. The camera worked but exposure was unreliable and W/B was off. Since I shoot everything in Raw W/B did not matter and I learned to live with the exposure issues. Bigma worked but the rear barrel and mount were sort of loose. On my return home I sent both in under warranty, Sigma repaired Bigma under warranty and paid for the shipping both ways. Pentax voided the warranty due to impact damage and wanted $350.00 to repair the camera. I declined and had to pay for return shipping. I got the K20D instead and it is at Pentax at the moment with focus issues.

Take care,

Hi Jeff and thank you. The dealer told me that it could take up to 8 weeks and it has been only 4 weeks, seems a lot longer though.

Take care,

Heinrich,

Beautiful pictures. Looks like there is seed in the feeder. Who said they eat like birds?

Nice shots Heinrich. I'll echo the other comments of, "Broken? Huh?" - looks good to me. Amazing that Sigma did that for you, too bad about Pentax (though of course, rationally, I think they did what I would expect).

Do you by any chance use Lightroom for post processing? Something has created a halo of lighter background around each bird (much more noticable in the second shot) and in Lightroom it would be too high a setting of the "Clarity" slider. I've done this to many of my shots too, it's a sutble effect, but a direct of the "local contrast enhancement" done by "clarity".

It seems you can work magic with a camera, broken or not. Great photos.

Thank you Josh and once one knows what is wrong with it one learns to work around it. As far as Pentax goes, I am not mad at them they did what was expected it was just that Sigma provided service beyond of what I had expected.

No, I do not use lightroom. Developed in ACR and processed in Photoshop CS4. Probably did not pay enough attention in "shadow-highlights".

Take care,
