Appreciate your input.

I have been asked to provide a shot to be printed up for a poster print size in a commercial building foyer. The request is for beach/sunrise scene.

(trembles)

and I am really not sure, so I have played around with a few from the past and come up with these....so what do you think? All shot with the old DS by the way, so I am a little concerned as to how they will print up in the size requested, but we will have to experiment with that.

If it is for a job, use a tripod. I've noticed some of these have high ISOs resulting in excessive noise. No 4 especially.

That random cloud (toward the middle) in No 4 looks more like a big blob of dirt. I'd get rid of that.

So in all, I'm saying reshoot with lower ISOs. Your framing is great already.

Wow.. nicely done. I prefer the last one but I am sure you will get a mixed bag from others on the one they prefer. Good luck and make sure you post the one you choose. JIM

I prefer the fourth one - almost abstrract. You should, however, get the horizon off the center line - use the rule of thirds.

I like the fourth one also Grant. The first one would be perfect, I love the look of the sea in the foreground but I don't think the blown out patch of sunlight would print well although maybe printing on canvas would tone it down some.

I would suggest getting friendly with a printer and get their advice on selection and how big they could print. Again, I think printing on canvas could give more latitude.

#3 or #4, either one really. As others mentioned I would apply the rule of 3rds to #3, putting the horizon high. For a print I'm thinking you'll need to play with the tone curve on #3 some to bring up the details. They also both appear (to me) to have a slight horizon tilt up to the right (counter clockwise) - could be the land and clouds playing with my eyes too.

Just some questions, mate. These shots are very horizontal and rectangular - have they confirmed this is the format they want and is the space they've provided suitable for this orientation? Are you (and are they) happy to have no humans/dogs/kites/whatever to give a sense of scale? Your shots (which are lovely, by the way) could be either sunrise or sunset. Is there some way you could make it unmistakably sunrise? (Is it important?). Do they want wild and wooly or something more urban? I agree with the others about shifting the horizon, but you don't have to stick to thirds if you have a great sky or a great foreground.
If you're feeling bold, you could print off a selection at A3 or so, put 'em on a board outside the premises one morning and simply ask passers-by which one has the greatest impact on them in the context of your brief. A friend of mine in the Phillipines does that and reckons it's a good way to solve these kinds of problems and is good PR.
Congrats on grabbing the job, mate. Good feeling?

Nicely done I think #3 or #4. I am leaning towards #3 as I love the Sun in there and the surfers on the side.

Thank you one & all for your responses, I am still genuinely undecided (each shot has a strong point that I like)...... so I will re-shoot with the K20, thus removing any doubt as to the ability to print a large size.

Cheers
Grant

Number 3 is my favorite. The light is more subtle and interesting with a good graduation of colour across the sky

1 & 3 are my favourites.

2 has too much sand. If you have to crop 3 to fit it in the space, maybe a little less sand would be better too. 4 seems to be thematically like too many other photos.

Somehow numbers 1,2 and 4 make me freeze. 3's my favorite, unreal and magical. But what's the theme more precisely, there are sunrise scenes and sunrise scenes. Is it supposed to be summer, warm, sun bathing, tourism associated? Or perhaps new horizon like atmosphere?

I like #4 if you crop off most of the black blob along the bottom. Just MHO.
