Catapillar
Posted By: Buddha Jones, 04-12-2007, 09:31 AM

I found this little guy on a fence while I was messing around in the back yard so I decided to see if he would be so kind as to pose for me. I shot these with the 18-55mm kit lens.

For the kit lens I'm very impressed.

I really don't know why some people were looking down on it in the beginning.

The results pretty good by my low standards, but I ordered the 16-45mm anyway so I can see just what the differences are. I will be running a number of tests when I get it.

Nice pictures, it's making me really anxious to get my reversing ring so I can play with some macros.

The subject line reminded me of some pictures I took last August with my wife's P&S digital, and I feel a little like Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee when he said "That's not a knife .... now THAT's a knife". This Catapillar had me running for the internet doing searches on "Giant Catapillar", and the coloring is something like I've rarely seen in nature other than bird eggs.

You guys are disgusting :P

Anyone who says the kit lens isn't good is lying. It's a damn fine lens for the price!

I think it's a Regal Moth Catapillar ... the Catapillar is called a Hickory Horned Devil

Nice pics, specially like the second one. And yes, that kit lens is the most impressive piece of glass of any standard lens kit I've ever seen!

Regards,
D

Jones, the second one is very nice! You managed to squeeze every bit of quality out of the kit lens. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Thanks Asad, I must admit tho that I did have to adjust the levels on that just a smidge cuz I was to lazy to get my AF360 from inside, I had to use hte onboard one.

nice shots

I don't have the 18-55 but from the shots I've seen, such as these, I want one. I think it's a great lens, the price is irrelevant. I have the 18-50 sigma, the cheap one that gets rubbished by reviewers, still get good shots with it. More than expensive lenses I need good subjects in interesting light! Are you using Aperture priority on these shots?

Hi B. Jones, nice shots, BTW that is a gypsy moth catepillar if you needed to know, I'm always impressed with the kit lens, I have no idea why some people malign it so, it's easily the best bang-for-the-buck lens in my bag, and it's ALWAYS in my bag if not on the camera.

NaCl(yes it vignettes a bit and has a bit of distortion but it's less than $100!)H2O
