Death by Inches

This is the first time I've seen so graphic a depiction of "death by inches. " Along Highway 53 in New Mexico on the Zuni Reservation, a single juniper, healthy on the left, sick in the middle, dying and finally dead on the right. What I can't say is which direction it's moving,

I don't get it. Are you talking about the dead branches?

This is all one bush, and it's unusual to see such clear divisions between the living and the dead part of the plant, with two levels inbetween. Nothing more than that,

Is the dying one a Juniper or a Pinon pine? (I can't tell from the picture.) The bark beetles in the west are very fond of Pinons, but have no taste for Junipers. As a result, vast stretches of territory that used to be populated by Pinons and Junipers now have only Junipers; the Pinons are all dead.
