Nice shots. The Union is getting ready for a paint job - it is looking a bit tatty.

In fact Tornado came through Eckington this morning light engine from Barrow Hill travelling to London to do a northbound trip on Saturday morning 18th from Kings Cross to York on the ECML. Don't have any detailed times as yet.

It generally crawls through Potteric Carr Nature Reserve near Doncaster Potteric Carr Nature Reserve: Home Page if it is watering at the Royal Mail hub.

I spend a lot of my time at the Reserve hailing from Rotherham and catch most of the steamers when they come through, though I mostly do macro work there.

those look totally awesome, question though;

my understanding (lets go with limited) of HDR is that you need several shots of the same thing with different exposures that you then layer on each other and combine. So my question is, what technique do you use to get such awesome shots of moving things?

Thanks

Answering the above question: a single RAW gives you all the exposures you need.

And yes, the photos are absolutely superb. I like the last one most.

All excellent shots and HDR prosessing but the first one is a standout. I bet they would look even better as sepia prints.

Thanks for the kind remarks. They are actually a mix of two methods of HDR the 1st and 2nd are three separate PEF files tonemapped in Photomatix Pro, the 3rd is done by extracting 3 separate files from one PEF file with roughly 2EV values between them altered by using the Exposure slider in PS Raw Converter, and then blended in Photomatix Pro.

Photomatix Pro is quite good at removing 'ghosts' from three separate exposures provided you check the 'attempt to remove ghosts' box.

The K10D is probably the best DSLR there is for this technique as selecting 3 or 5 frames and setting the EV value between them is so easy compared to other makes. You can set and unset the mode in literally a couple of seconds.

Thanks for the link John, we will certainly spend a day there sometime soon. The paint finish on the Union is perhaps not as bad as HDR shows it, but I like the way it has brought out the stress ripples in the cylinder wrap which can't be seen on casual observation even when stood next to the engine.

Sorry I missed Tornado.

Chris

This is one of the very few times I've seen HDR used in such a successful way without ruining othr aspects of the shots. Very well done.

The timings for Tornado on 18th are now on the web at www.uksteam.info . It calls at Carlton 12.33-12.44, Retford 12.59-13.05 and is due through Loversall (Potteric Carr) at 13.20. A bit late for me as I have to get back for lunch.

It is back through south at around 17.30

I agree with the others: Some uses of HDR are pretty bad (including some of my own), but this is an outstandingly good use, and well executed to boot!
