Return of the Swans
Posted By: JMR, 04-17-2009, 03:08 PM

Last night I was very fortunate to come across a pair of swans in a small alcove at sunset, which had wonderful subtle colours. But I almost blew it, because I was so focused on the movement and position of the swans that I did not notice I had earlier switched to manual focus mode. I was shooting handheld and ruined most of the shots but managed to salvage this and another image. I only made basic brightness and horizon alterations so far.

Edit- I decided to show two more images from the shoot. One is not bad, a wider view and a beautiful juxtaposition of the swans as they gracefully swim away. The last image is an attempt to save an otherwise good image using the Orton technique in BW. I think I saved only one other image that I consider good; the rest are blurry or the swans are not well placed for my liking.

This is just gorgeous. Excellent composition. It'd work without the swans, but you have that wonderful moment captured as well! I really hope you captured this one sharply even though you had technical problems, so you can be completely happy with it. I'd hate to think I had the chance to capture this moment and ended up with something not sharp enough to print.

Many thanks. And yes, I think I will print this image. I could probably have shot in Manual, but as it gets dark, this gets more difficult. And it would help if knew I was in Manuel!

Many thanks Jeff, I also developed a classic hooked finger from holding the shutter for so long, expecting the swans to move in second. But in the end it is worth the effort.

A subject on the first photo is simply magnificent! The key is very liked, a picture turned out a volume.

Superb shots! Have you ever been chased by a swan? How can something so elegant and calm have such an ORNERY disposition?

Thanks for adding the extra photos!
