Backward Portrait
Posted By: dylansalt, 04-19-2009, 06:05 AM

I thought I would publish this photo for comment.

Most portraits are normally presented with the subjects facing the camera.

I took this one with my daughter & her daughter sharing a moment staring out at the vastness of Sterkfontein Dam -

(In 1998 the oldest complete hominid skeleton was discovered at the site, believed to be 3.2 to 3.6 million years old. Robert Broom initiated excavations at Sterkfontein.....)

for me the photo creates a sense of absolute togetherness between mom & daughter both facing out towards (in a place of pristine beauty) a future in a world slowly seemingly imploding

It is a nice shot, however, I would like to see the black thing on the left side cropped out. Would make the image less distracting and focus on the subjects better.

The only way I could crop is in the square format as I needed to include the distant landmass.

The black thingy on the left is in fact the boat canopy

The square format does indeed work well

cheers

Oh I like that so much better...sorry not a boater so I didn't know what the black thing was! I hope you weren't offended by my suggestion, I'm just used to critiquing and like it when other's give me their thoughts on my photographs. It's a never ending learning experience. I love what you did, I think it looks great!
