Flora & Rust
Posted By: Maffer, 04-19-2009, 08:17 AM

I was originally going hunting for metallic textures and while I found what I was looking for I also came along some interesting flora along the road.

First the rusty surface. The DOF zone crosses the boundary of rust in the middle of the picture:

Along the road high up on a rock formation I found some brand new bunch of moss surrounded by ice and tried my luck with handheld macro shot. Amongst the moss there were these glowing "tentacles" which started to glow when the sunlight hit 'em:

And finally some new stuff fighting it's way thru the surface:

Some lichen:

Re: Flora & Rust

I particularly like the last one. Wish the DOF were a tad deeper, though.

The rust is cool too, but I feel it is lacking a real subject. Maybe there is an old bolt / nail you can focus on, and use that as the subject, surrounded by a sea of rust?

#2 has a somewhat ugly background, and is a little soft.
#3 is soft and just out-of-focus, but still quite good. Nice to see spring is here!

Macro handheld is tough. Take lots of shots to increase the chances of at least one being sharp. I often don't bother using the MF ring, simply lean myself forward / backward, squeezing the shutter button liberally.

Thank you for feedback AlexD and stevebrot.

Indeed there is not much of a subject in the sea of rust. There wasn't any interesting bolts around, just a huuuge plate of iron. But on the other hand, I was taking pics for rusty textures to be used by my friend for his 3d-studio project.

And yea, handheld macro is plain headache. I thought of ordering a gorillapod for use in a place where standard tripod just won't budge.
