woody the woodpecker
Posted By: axl, 04-19-2009, 02:11 PM

The other day we were just walking in Richmond park, and suddenly my wife just stops me and points finger ahead.
Damn, the longest lens I had was Sigma 105 but I gave it a go anyway,
this is nearly 100% crop but I'm happy with the effort, as it was first time I saw green woodpecker since in England (some 5years now), and first time I managed to photograph any woodpecker at all:

Re: woody the woodpecker

Nice work, especially considering the lens in use. I find it VERY hard to shoot pretty much any wild bird with my Pentax 100mm macro lens.

I think some colour and contrast adjusting will help add further "pop" to the image.

Thanks for sharing.

Peter, a great shot

I have never seen woodpeckers on a lawn! The colour is contrasted by the green grass itself. Quite interesting

Peter, this is a great shot.

James, these green woodpeckers happen to eat ants, and therefore they come to the ground often. Some weeks ago I watched one for more than an hour, just ruining an ants nest. No camera with me....

Great shot Peter!

I could be wrong but it looks more like a Flicker, a member of the woodpecker family. They are comfortable foraging on the ground eating insects found there.

It is a nice shot (not the right lens, but a good one.) The bird does look a bit like a Flicker--which, it is true, frequents the ground. Are there Flickers in the UK?

He is, in fact, a Green Woodpecker. I found a reference to him here. What a striking bird!

Good capture Peter, you were lucky, woodpeckers are normally extremely shy.

I have been trying to get a shot of Woody Woodpecker for about a year...

We have a couple of pileated woodpeckers in the area. Literally "Woody Woodpecker", I think they were the model for the cartoon. These things are a trip: Huge. Skittish. Goofy. Shy. He came up on me one morning when I was working on the boat. I sat and watched him for quite a while. He sounds like a jackhammer.
