First attempt at Portraits

Having just got my first flash I've started experimenting with it.
Not too many willing "models" in the house, but my girl friend came over and humored me for a bit.
Any tips or suggestions!?
Criticisms and comments very much appreciated!

You've lost her chin in the first shot, thats not too good a thing to do. You can lose some of the forehead when composin' a shot like this but never the chin IMO.

The second shot is good. I would've asked her to remove her watch from under sleeve, and try to keep some detail in her hair.

I prefer the second too - it's a nice shot. I agree with the comments above - or you could try to change the angle a bit so that the hair is also out of focus, which would keep the attention on the eyes longer - thanks for sharing the shots!

I like the B+W version better. It has more atmosphere to it.
