Questions on Ducks
Posted By: Jimbo, 04-26-2009, 11:18 AM

I notice that they always travel in pairs. I can only assume they are partners and stay together. It this correct and if so is it seasonal or for life? Rarely do I not see them in pairs. JIM

I noticed that down this way too, Jim. From what I've read, so far, it appears Mallards are a 'mate for life' species. Apparently, the Canada Goose is too.

From what I understand they do mate for life. But if one dies the other will look for another mate after a couple of years. Maybe someone else can confirm this or tell me I'm wrong.

Loons are (from what I hear) especially notorious for this. This is why loon calls are discouraged by a number of people. As for ducks, I've noticed it more among some species than others. Mallards tend to be more communal than others, specifically in the early spring/late fall. Buffleheads seem to stay exclusively in pairs. They also never come close enough to shore to reach with a 200mm...

Jim, many species of bird are monogamous, not all but (and I'm happy for someone to correct me) I think more are than aren't.

Thank you Jim. Makes sense. They stay very close to each other. JIM
