Bee in Flight

It's shots like these when I really appreciate the combination of manual focus lenses and a digital SLR body :-)

Very 3D-ish. The bee seem to float above the image.

Thanks. Yeah, primes are great for being great at what they do, if you follow me.

The Volna-9 is great for macro and close-ups, but also great for bokeh and color rendition. This shot is fairly heavily cropped (I'd say about 50%) so, it's not technically macro at all, but because of the characteristic of the lens, it creates this nice 3D quality to it.

But most importantly, having that freedom of total control over focus and aperture at the touch of my left hand's fingers is what allowed this shot, which was, by the way, shot completely hand-held while I was frantically following bees around under a cherry tree :-D

Yeah, that was what really caught my eye as I developed this image in Aperture; made me go "Whoa!". I post my photos over at Flickr, and I'm not one to post tons of my mediocre photos everywhere, but I thought this one was good enough to warrant a post outside of my Flickr streem :-)

Thanks for the comments!

amazing shot. i've spent some time squatting in the bushes trying to chase bees using manual focus and i have yet to get a flying one in focus; that is tough to do. your shot looks so clean and sharp, especially with the light pink flowers to contrast the bee. very nice!
i am not familiar with that Volna lens but it is apparently quite special indeed.

Very good shot, also a good candidate for the "Opposing Gravity" challenge in the Mini_Challenges forum?

Thanks everybody!! I'm happy I posted.

If anybody is interested in how I got this shot (I actually got at least two other shots with the same bee "in-focus"), you can click on the photo and go to my Flickr page; I outlined the details of my method in the comments section. It all boils down to: fast shutter speed, narrow aperture, rapid continuous shots :-)

I should also look into that mini-challenge thingy...

Here's one other shot I took; I liked the angle of the bee and the flower but wasn't 100% satisfied because of the lack of wings :-)
