Beautiful.

Is it possible for you to tell us a little story or a little of the history of the place? I love that sort of thing and love it even more when there's a story to go along with it.

D00D!!! Its Indiana Jones!!! Well, for those of you who have seen the movie I am sure you will recognize it. I barely made it through the loading of the first picture when I recognized it. Great shots, esp the 3rd and 5th ones IMO.

These are terrific, Piotr. Getting shots like this while being a tourist and a photographer is very impressive.

i really like the shots. but, since i've been to petra, i can tell it's hard to make a bad photo there. the color and atmosphere are so intense, and they're also unusual, so it's one of photography heavens (they have splendid weather usually, as well) .

I'd love to go there! Did you guys go through the really narrow canyon to get there?

If I remember my biblical prophecy, that's a place that people are supposed to take shelter during armegeddon.

I used to live in Jordan and have been to Petra numerous times. You captured the colours fairly well, although there's always colour surprises everywhere you go in Petra and its neighbour Wadi Rum. Unfortunately, photos don't really convey the experience: long walk through the Siq, often very hot (Jordanian desert regular 40 - 50°C), twist and turn then BAM! the glowing pink treasury building carved facade shown in Piotr's second shot, which is world wide standard photo fare, up there with Bryce canyon, Eiffel tower, Great Wall, turquoise beaches, etc.

Several hotels there, usually you can enjoy the mensaf: whole roast sheep and rice, eat with your hands, look out for the eyeball!

Extremely brief history: Petra was carved out of the sandstone cliffs by the ruling Nabateaens as a stronghold - village protecting them from various marauding hordes of Saracens, Mamelukes, etc. Behind is very rough mountainous terrain, the only access point is the kilometer long Siq, a dry canyon - mountain crack. This area of Jordan is awesome. T.E. Lawrence description of Wadi Rum in Seven Pillars of Wisdom is about the most beautiful writing in the English language, certainly Lawrence who loved Arabia felt it was the most beautiful spot. A short distance away is Aqaba on the Red Sea, across the fence, literally, is Eilat in Israel; both very popular tourist destinations for the beaches, swimming and the famed coral reefs.

Great shots - my sister lived in Jordan ~25 years ago and I remember her telling me about visiting Petra. It's been on "my list" since then.

Thanks Piotr, for showing these wonderfilled shots. Very beautiful. I've decided that I can't join any more photography forums. First I join DPR and I get LBA. Then I join up here and now I have travel lust!

Thank you all for comments, especially thanks to Donald for his description of this amazing place.

Just few words from me. This place is really magic with special atmosphere. When you walk between rocks you fill all these people from different civilizations who lived there during thousands years.

When I was there were hundreds of young school girls in many groups. They were young, beautiful very happy, laughing, shouting. It was something special - this contrast between old dead city and young girls.
