Mount Saint Helens
Posted By: scole, 05-10-2009, 10:40 PM

Climbed Mt St Helens this weekend. This was my first successful attempt since it re-opened to climbing after the volcanic activity of 2004-2006. It's certainly no picnic at 12 miles roundtrip and 5,500 feet of elevation gain but the ability to ride down from summit to trailhead is pretty sweet!

Unfortunately, the avalanche danger was high this weekend so I didn't spend more than 10 minutes on the summit and didn't even really know if my summit photos were exposed properly (too bright & windy).

1. Friday evening (DA18-55 w/ handheld ND Grad)

2. (DA55-300 @ 62mm)

3. Last light on the upper slopes (DA55-300 @ 300mm)

4. A moonlit mountain @ 4am (DA12-24 @ 12mm)

5. 5 shot Crater panorama (DA12-24 @ 12mm)

6. Detail of crater wall (DA18-55 @ 55mm)

I just realized while processing these photos that I forgot to reset my ISO back to 100 from 400 after taking the moonlit shot. Doh!

Thanks for looking..

Lovely thanks.

Any photo's to with mountain ranges is a real treat being an avid mountaineer myself.

The panoramic shot captures the range nicely

awesome pics, I'd love to get up there someday! The mountain looked beautiful from mt. tabor today.

quick question though why did you shoot moonlight shot at iso 400? Whenever I do a night exposure set to 100 and a constant aperture (usually f/8) and play with exposure times. Interested to see if there is a better technique out there

Those are great shots Steve. Being a geologist and a volcano nut, my favorite is the crater wall detail shot, very nice. Much better than those fuzzy ones you see from the helicopter video footage

Thanks for sharing. I was bicycling a few miles south of the mountain on Saturday afternoon and thought at the time that it was a wonderful day for a climb. Good work and congratulations on the accomplishment.
