End Homelessness Now! Photo Project
Posted By: paulyrichard, 05-12-2009, 04:51 AM

These images are part of my ongoin' 'End Homelessness Now! project ongoin' through to 2012. The aim of this project is to highlight the plight of these unfortunate individuals on the streets of London, my hometown.
A portfolio of photos will be built up and hopefully I will have the opportunity to show Boris Johnson (Mayor of London) and remind him, in the event he doesn't stay true to his commitments in helping the homeless people of London with homes, healthcare, basic aid and social exclusion.

I have been in talks with Crisis a homeless charity run in Central London, and this is where they will be able to help me. Andrew Page has expressed great interest in my photos and would like to show my work in an exhibition at some future date.

Every homeless person I meet on the streets I engage with and talk to and try to understand how they came to be homeless. This way I try to bust open the myths and preconceptions that some people have about the homeless.
The money and cigarettes I give them in return comes straight out of my own pocket.

BTW, I don't smoke, and thank you for lookin'.

Pauly

I have been following all your posts in this series and have found them very enlightening.

I do some volunteer work for the homeless and really appreciate your efforts and the manner in which you have taken photos.

Keep it up and I hope its not the end of the series.

I actually tried this the other week when I was confronted with a homeless man in the middle of the city when I had camera in hand.. I just did not have the guts to take his photo.. something held me back and instead I gave him some money and sat and talked with him for a spell.

Maybe next time

Neil

Absolutely compelling shots. Very well done. I've occasionally contemplated a homeless series as well, but don't feel like I'm skilled enough to pull it off yet.

#8 is excellent - love the wide angle, close focus. What were your settings for this one?

Pauly, now that the format of the threads has changed, you could just keep adding to the first post if you want as that post will always be at the top of each paqe.

Steve, that one was shot at 34mm @ f4.

Gary, I noticed that, I thought someone was quotin' the initial post at first. Thanks.

What you are doing for the homeless sounds amazing! And you're pictures are just as amazing!

Not to draw any attention away from the sad fact that these people have to be homeless, but I just remembered about ten years ago living in Berlin. I had left my keys at my friends place, gone home to the other end of the city, coming home at around 3:30 am to discover that I couldn't get in. I found a nice bench in the park where I estimated that the sun would rise later. Waking up from a huge dog barking in my face a few hour later.

Hope I didn't end up in a homeless photo collection that night...

Superb portraits. I love the one with the ATM in the background, very confronting.
