NYC subway system
Posted By: skeuos, 05-12-2009, 06:15 PM

There have been a couple threads recently on photographers getting harassed in subways around the world (NYC included), so I figured I'd post a few shots from my ongoing personal project. All were shot with a K100D Super and the DA15-55. C&C always appreciated.

1. Before and after

2. Manhattan-bound

3. Uptown local

4. Impatience

5. 63rd and Lex

For some reason underground stuff nearly always work best in B&W. Good set #4 for me, with the sweeping curve.

i think 1st and 2nd are good enough for some article about subways.
3rd is my favorite (because it's simple).
and i like 5th - color makes that place more real to me (more than black&white)

Although i would like to agree with Dom, i think shot #5 works best for me.

The vivid red tiles and texture of the roof really work well. Did you have the camera on the ground for that one?

I too was about to agree with Dom, but then comes that fifth picture and I can't make up my mind anymore
They are all really nice, but to find a composition as simple as #3 (as dayah also mentioned) and then make the picture stand out the way it does, really inspires me.

I'm not sure whether I would prefer the last image in b&w as opposed to color, or perhaps with a little PP, retain only the red wall, and convert the rest to B&W

Makes me want to live in a filthy, crowded, smelly city with a subway system instead of my filthy, crowded, smelly city that does not have a subway system.

I like 'em.

good pictures!!

But how did you get the people out of the subway station?
I never seen 14th street station so empty
And don't let me start talking about Lexington Ave and the train problem of the east side. usually this station is so busy you need cops to push the people in to the trains

These are all quite good, but I prefer B&W for the subject matter/ambiance. The contrast and lines make "the electric sewer" look somewhat attractive.
