Magnolia Tree Flower
Posted By: Sailor, 05-15-2009, 10:54 AM

Yesterday evening I grabbed a snapshot of a budding flower on the magnolia tree in our front yard. In a shameless imitation of paulyrichard's posting of a "monochrome flower", I converted the picture to B&W. I've also included the color version for comparison.

Thanks, JIM and Scott. I prefer the B&W, as well.

I agree. The B&W is my favorite over the color image.

The B&W definitely looks nicer -- the glare off the leaves is a little distracting but not enough to impact the image overall.

Thanks much for the nice words - also, I almost didn't post this image because of the glare, but I'm not sufficiently accomplished at PP to get rid of it without screwing up the whole image. And you are absoluely right - it is distracting.

If you shot in RAW you might be able to recover some detail from the glare areas -- just lowering the exposure if they're blown out won't do anything other than make the solid white solid grey though. But even so, it might be worth doing just to avoid pulling attention from the main subject.
