Gooseberry Falls
Posted By: navcom, 05-15-2009, 08:21 PM

Posted this photo on another forum so I thought I'd post it here and see what Pentaxians have to say. I took the photo about a year ago and have had it set aside as a "so-so" photo. Would appreciate any comments or critiques.

Very nice water flow there. Pity about the shadow due to high contrast environment

Excellent shot

Exactly! I hate shooting landscapes in the middle of the day but had no choice in this case. We've passed by this area many times but it's always in the middle of the day. Since it's 200 miles away from home, it's not easy to make a special trip.

I will actually be going by here on Wednesday....at about mid-day...of course.

I'm hoping for an overcast day. It might look better as a B&W. Also will try to do away with the tree...or at least get it in a spot on the photo that isn't so distracting.

Thanks for the comment!

Actually, I think the shadow adds some nice contrast.
I like the shot but I'd like to see a larger version.

Ask and you shall receive...

It's not "super-sized", but I can't upload the original from where I'm at. This is as big as I can get for now.

Yeah I still like it and I still think the shadow adds to the shot.

I like the flow of water on the falls that you've captured, and the wide crop you've gone for, but I think that tree cutting across at the right third of the photo kinda ruins it.

I think that's a very nice shot, Nav. I need to get up there this summer.

Couldn't agree more. The tree is kind of annoying. My next visit will include a shot without it.

You definately should! I love the north shore. We will be up there mid week through the weekend (Grand Marais area). It looks like the weather might be perfect for some great hiking and photo-taking.

I enjoyed the shot and I'm not bothered by the shadow.

Stopped by the Falls on the way up yesterday and was able to get this shot. I think it's a better composition even though it's still mid-day sun. For some reason the shot lost some color saturation when I uploaded it to Flickr. Seems a bit drab compared to when I view it in Photo shop or Windows Viewer.

I actually liked the shot you posted last with the tree. If I had to do it, I'd go for something with the tree a bit more to the right with some space between it and the falls.

The last photo isn't bad, but it definitely has a blue cast... Perhaps the white balance is a bit off?

I was up there once about 10 years ago (my grandfather was from the area), but my photos of those falls didn't turn out nearly as good due to lack of photo skills and more importantly, stormy weather leaving the falls looking very muddy.

Unfortunatley I'm currently at a computer where I can't view my images so I can't see what you see. The white balance is probably correct (I manually set it with a gray card). It's most likely a post-processing error on my part. I fiddled with it in Photoshop and I have a tendency to screw that up.

Post-processing is my achilles heal...I usually do more damage than good...even when I just barely change things. I didn't do much PP but I did change the color saturations a bit. I probably changed it too much.
