"Inland Hurricane" 2009
Posted By: Chris Stearns, 05-16-2009, 09:09 PM

Ok, maybe calling it a "hurricane" is wrong. The winds only reached 108mph, it only lasted 45 minutes, and technically a hurricane must start over water. Regardless, it was unlike any weather event anyone around here has ever seen. Our town alone lost over 3000 trees.

Relatively few injuries and only one storm related death, so we were lucky. It was very surreal though. This is the first time that I can remember having a curfew from dusk to dawn for four nights, and it was nearly impossible to enforce a curfew in a university town on graduation weekend.

The remnants of Ike passed over us last year and blew limbs and trees down. I didn't have power for four days that time. Wow, twice in less than a year!

Chris, I just noticed you're located in Sourthern Illinois. I was born and grew up in Mt. Vernon and did my undergrad work at SIU - so I know how rough the weather can be in that part of the world.

Carbondale, IL must have been devastated by this freak storm.

I recall Ike - blew directly over St. Louis and Carbondale. For 45 minutes we had sustained 75 mph winds and torrential rain, then nothing for three hours, then winds in the opposite direction and more rain.

Truly strange, but not as bad as a tornado.
