Portrait shots of our son....
Posted By: GLThorne, 04-20-2007, 08:46 PM

Before I left this morning, I grabbed the K100 with the Sigma 28-70 F/2.8 EX (non-DG) and grabbed a few shots of our soon to be 16 month old before eating his breakfast. Running late as I was, as usual, I half-heartedly played with the exposure to get the most I could out of these. I have been shooting in manual mode a good bit for a while, well as long as I've had the 28-70, so around 4 weeks now. This is only natural lighting at around 7:45AM EST.

Any C/C is very welcomed as I've been asked do do something similar for 2 different family friends over the next few weeks. Exciting and at the same time nerve racking, at least for me, as I tend to be a bit hard on myself. So, give it too me on these.......but be gentle!!!

It would be very hard to improve on these
If you want to try something new next time...if the window isn't in the photo, put one of those very thin white see through curtains in front of it (the window) to diffuse the light a bit more. It will give a simular effect as the first shot you posted. But like I said, these are great shots to begin with!

cheers

Great captures, really well done, particularly 1, 4 and 5 imo - very different expressions, and everything comes together nicely!

Regards,
D

There's something missing Greg

You have 6 photos of a 16 month old, and he doesn't have a dirty face in even 1 picture

Good job, and he's a cute little guy

Great shots. Hard to take a bad picture of a happy child. One thing you might want to try, putting a reflector on the opposite side of the window to fill in the shadows a little. It could be white poster board or one of those silver windshield sun blocks.

What a cutie you have for a son! These pictures came out really good. I've been staring at them trying to come up with some C&C for you, but take everything I say with a grain of salt, since I don't know what I'm talking about!!

The first picture I would crop the left part almost to his sleeve.

For #2 & #3, the shadows are a little harsh, so like Tim said, you could use a reflector or even a fill flash.

On 4, 5, & 6 I might try cropping some of the top to see how that looks.

The really good things you did are getting down to the eye level of your son. I personally like the angle of the first three. You also did a good job of keeping the eyes sharp & in focus. Your son has gorgeous eyes, especially in the third picture.

You did a great job! Looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Carol
