28Mp 100% crop from a 60 year old russian camera?
Posted By: Jimfear, 05-18-2009, 03:36 AM

Serious geekwarning here!

I scanned some MF(6x6) film at 2400dpi which resulted in a digital file of 28Mp. It was shot with a 60 year old russian Lubitel 1 (same guys who make Lomo and Holga cameras but they actually made lenses out of glass at this time). I've done a 100% crop of one of the pics. I think this shows a couple of things:
- MF is something completely different when it comes to resolution
- You don't need a Canikon D3x MkIII to make hi-res images
- And thirdly you really don't need that resolution because a boring pic of a tree will probably never be printed in 70X70cm and hung on the wall.

Full pic.

100% crop

And finally a pic of the tool itself

I've been thinking about getting a MF film body. This shows that it could be well worth it. I just need to find a nice Pentax 645NII.

Excellent result. MF is such a great medium, no wonder the pros are still using it heavily.

Let's hope they keep on doing so, so that the 120 film remains available

In terms of big prints, nothing can touch MF film....(except sheet film)

I think everybody should try MF at least once, just holding that completely oversized negative in your hand and checking detail directly from the negative is something special. Hope they never stop making MF film!

I'm at the moment also searching for a large format camera but it's a jungle! I can't even start to understand what stuff works with what camera and why the prices vary so greatly between seemingly similar cameras. If anyone's into large format please give me some pointers...

PM me or start a new thread on large format if you want -- I can offer some advice and input, having used various rigs over the years.

And yeah, medium format is amazing bang for the buck if you're willing to scan. I'd be curious to run some tests and see how it compares to my 1Ds II files on big prints (20x30 or so). Maybe I'll break out the RB67 one of these days and do that.
