A try at B&W
Posted By: tcom, 05-23-2009, 10:12 AM

I shot the steamboats of Lake Geneva already quite often, this time, I tried to turn the photos into B&W (under PS):

K20D, DA*200

K20D, DA*200

What do you think? Comments and critiques are welcome

I like the second one,
on the first there is something missing but I can't quite put my finger on it.
Maybe a bit "higher" key would do the trick...
but good attempts...

It is just a bit "flat" -- bumping the exposure and then tweaking the curves should improve it. But the light source appears to be on the far side so only so much can be done there.

Quick levels adjustment:

B&W matches the vintage of the boats perfectly.
I'm going to go against the grain and say I prefer the first one best. I think the problem people might have is that it is too clean looking. Perhaps some PS induced vignetting (and some work on contrast) would improve that to give it a more authentic, vintage feel.

Thank you for all the comments. I will have to make further tries at B&W processing.
