Light Air Abstract in B&W
Posted By: Sailor, 05-30-2009, 01:35 PM

Here's a B&W conversion of a shot "up the mast" taken as we sailed in light winds (what sailors often refer to as "light air"). Another shot with my new DA 15, I'm afraid.

This is my first B&W conversion with my laptop (I'm "working" from the boat), and I'm a bit unsure of the monitor. I'll look at it at home tomorrow and see if I want to make changes.

Jer

Nice shot Jer and I think the PP is quite good. Contrast is spot on IMHO. I'm jealous btw, was supposed to go sailiing tomorrow, but it has been cancelled. :cries:

Looks good on my monitor! I like the way it rolls down the screen.

I've lived on Puget Sound now most of my life and haven't been sailing significantly...

Son's are into it and two just bought sailboats so it looks like I will be soon!

Nice shot! Hard to tell where the sails end and the sky begins, but that's a good thing.

Nicely done Jer, that's a great composition. The sea air must be inspiring you.

Very nice shot. I'm not too fond of the conversion though, everything is in the white to mid-gray range whereas BW shots ideally should have the whole range from white to black. On the other hand I'm not sure how you could do this, perhaps convert with a darker sky?

Thanks, buddy. Sorry you missed your sail; come down to Texas and crew with me. Just bring your camera and the beer!

Hey Gary - thanks man. The sea air (and a cold beer or two) will do that!

Beer? But I thought sailboats ran on wind?...Oh I get it, the crew runs on beer!

Btw, in several thousand years, there will be a nice layer of bauxite (or whatever happens to aluminum beer cans when covered with salt water for several thousand years) at the bottom of Long Island Sound. I must admit that my dindaddy (a mentor of my old man's and a surrogate grandfather to me) my father, and myself all three tried to make that deposit as large as possible (up to the point where the cans cost a nickle anyway)

Hey, Old Friend. I know you'd be comfortable crewing with me - come on down.

Thanks much for the comment. I looked at the shot on my desktop and - frankly - the tones are about where I intended. My laptop presents a "different" picture, depending on the tilt of the screen - so I'm never sure.
