Firefighters - B&W or colour?
Posted By: Rense, 06-06-2009, 01:51 AM

Going through some older ones, I tried to so some pp'ing on some photos I made earlier this year of a heathland fire. I've shown some of this series allready, but not this particular one. Which one do you like better, the B&W or the colour version?

Have tried B&W with some filters maybe blue/green to bring the sky out.

That is a tough shot...the tree behind stands out in B&W while the power of the flame is in colour. I think I like B&W better

Thanks Dom! I thought I already pushed the blue to the edge, but going back to it, I darkened it even further. Here's the result, what do you think?

I like the coloured version. It tells a lot of story in the image.

I prefer the colour version, the detail and heat haze in the flame is less obvious in the conversion.

I presume this is a burn for ecological reasons?

Thank you Dale, for you opinion. In deed it is done for ecological reasons.

I couldn't resist playing with your photo for a bit - I hope you don't mind.

I think it speaks a lot more in colour, and I don't think the sky really adds to the picture. I desatured it and toyed with a yellow haze and quite liked it.

Danny, thanks for your opinion! I use LightRoom 2 for all of my conversions...

Ha Kevin! Thanks for your conversion. I like it, but I like the original better. As far as the sky is concerned: I think it gives depth to the picture, but you have to see it completely, not cut off, like the ones I posted .... But then, I like your crop too...

You could BW it but let the fire color come through! Might be cheesy, but might be kind of cool.
