A Benny Shows a Bit of Bottom
Posted By: Sailor, 06-07-2009, 12:34 PM

Here are three shots taken yesterday of our friends' 30-ft Beneteau starting to heel in a stiffening breeze. Post processing, which often is difficult for contrasty on-the-water images of white hulls and sails, was further complicated by the fact that the sun was nearly overhead; however, I think these do a pretty good job of conveying what the "environment" looks like. All were taken with DA 18-250; fast shutter speeds are a must, since everything is moving.

The boat is close hauled on a port tack in all three pictures.

These folks took some shots of our boat as well, and I'm - of course - anxious to see them.

Very nice results, imho. I had some tough time today, in similar conditions.
CPL, I suppose...

Thanks very much. Shooting from a pitching deck is always a little challenging - at least for an old geezer like me.

Hey, thanks Pat. It was a fun day - best sailing breeze we've experienced this year.

Great shots, especially the head on one.

The water looks a little dirty though, is that shallow water under you ???

Those are great shots Jer - I think they will be very pleased. I would print and frame the first one.

Hey, Wal - thanks much. The water is, indeed, dirty in Galveston Bay, which is quite shallow - about 10-11 ft. In the first shot, you'll see a "brown streak" behind the boat, which due a commercial fishing boat having recently dragged a net through that area.

Hey - thanks Dave. Number 3 of this trio is my favorite as well. At this point, we were sailing virtually side-by-side, which means my DA 18-250 was only extended 80 or 90 mm (IIRC) - a FL at which the lens is much sharper than when extended to 200 or beyond.

Making this photo shoot a bit easier than it might have been is the fact our two boats are roughly the same size and speed - allowing us to stay in close proximity for enough time to take several images and pick the best. Of course, dockside I always claim my boat is faster , but nobody believes that any more than I believe their tall tales - especially during dockside cocktail hour.
