Fencing

You have a great sport with fast action to photograph and you are in a tough setting with distracting back round. I would try some low angle (lay down on the floor and shoot up) or higher angle (stand on a chair or ladder -shoot down) also isolate on one fencer until the other fencer moves into the frame and capture that exact moment when one scores on the mask or the vest. But keep shooting there is a great picture to be had!

All in all I like the last one because it has captured the energy of the thrust.

get permission to use some off-camera strobes. You could get some SICK shots of this sport by spotlighting this with strobes. I can think of ways to take these shots with either 1 2 or 3 strobes but obviously the more the better

I would second the recommendation of using flash and/or off camera strobes as well as isolating one or the other fencer as the background is very distracting. Even at f/2.8 you cannot freeze the action nearly enough while indoors. Use a telephoto lens or get as close as you can with the wide angle for some dramatic pop.

look at the background through camera viewfinder. Recompose.

Specifically:

bright windows behind action figures are extremely distracting.
very messy backgrounds lose contrast to foreground object.
look out for mirrors!

try using a fast tele lens like a 50 f/1.4 assuming you can get further away so you can blur the distracting background - be careful with focus though, try shooting perpendicular to their line of play

also - try not to get your subjects between yourself and windows and other big bright lights

my $.02 cents
