Pho shoot
Posted By: sharko, 06-08-2009, 11:53 PM

I shot the food for my friends restaurant over the weekend...first time shooting food so I really didn't know what the heck I was doing especially since these were to go on the menu but I thought a few of them came out ok. Comments/critique will be greatly appreciated!

Should the spoon be there or no? Is it better to include the whole bowl or just the food?

Nice colors and layout except I would leave the spoon and chopsticks out. Touch of the bowl rim is good but no need to show the whole bowl, IMO.

I would leave the chopsticks and spoon out also. This will place more attention on the food and not the utensils. Just showing part of the bowl is good. Good shots though.

Nice shots. I must agree with leaving out the utinsils. Great food I must add!

If you can, try to reflect more light onto the food. I was watching a food photography show and they had white boards/styrofoam all around the food.

I have to slightly disagree here. The chopsticks are ok but the spoon takes over the image. Perhaps the spoon under the food so the food stands out more, maybe.

Chopsticks good (fits in with the Asian/Viet food theme quite well), spoon bad (too dominating visually).

There's room for improvement, but I'd be quite happy with those shots if I was your friend. Did you get fed for your efforts?

I agree with the masses - looks tempting and the spoon takes away from the focus.

I say take out the spoon and leave the chopsticks. In Shot #4, the mussel is also too dominating. Best soup shots would be 2 or 4, minus the spoon. Good shots though, they make me hungry.

Yep, out with the spoon but leave the chopsticks. So did you get to eat these after shooting them?

Thanks all for your replies and input! We've decided to reshoot a few of the menu items (no spoon) so that there is more focus on the food.

I did get to have some Pad Thai and egg rolls after the shoot

I love Vietnamese food. Have it almost once a week. I would agree about leaving out the spoon. The chopstix look nice in the pics.
