Berlin
Posted By: kevinschoenmakers, 06-14-2009, 10:08 AM

Last week I went on a trip to Berlin with my study society (not really a good word, but I don't know what else to call it). I study Sinology (Chinese Language and Culture) - which by the way explains the high frequency of asians in the pictures - and to make the trip relevant to what we study we visited the Sinology department of the Free University of Berlin. For the rest we just had a great time, visited the obligatory highlights, got drunk and did not sleep anywhere near enough.

Photographically it was also a very good experience. I only brought one lens - K 55mm 1.8 - and had to deal with it's drawbacks (no zoom, no autofocus, no AE). This taught me alot and I really feel I've become a better photographer since last week. Compared with the first trip I used this camera on - a 3 week trip to China and North-Korea when I just had this camera - I now have much more pictures I'm really satisfied with in only 3 days.

Anyway, the pictures:

Nice to see these. Looks like you did almost exactly what I did in Berlin. That Holocaust memorial is really something.

You really did well for just one lens - it makes you think a lot more about composition for sure. You have a good eye - I enjoyed the series.

It's by far the most brilliant monument I've ever seen. It has a profound effect on you when you walk through it, and leaving it feels like resurfacing. I was genuinely impressed by it. It works alot better than 'just another statue'. And, you can take some awesome pictures there too.

I never but one time felt I wanted to have another focal length than what I had with me (I saw a good wide-angle opportunity but fortunately a friend had a DSLR with her with a normal zoom on it). I thought my next lens was going to be the DA40mm, but now I'm not so sure. Perhaps this is all the lens I need

Some nice photos in there. I particularly liked the set with the large cement blocks.
