Big Iron - Fire Power of Another Era
Posted By: Sailor, 06-17-2009, 02:38 PM

Yesterday we visited the battleship Texas, built in 1915 and used through WWII; conditions were probably the worst possible for photography on one of the longest days of the year with the sun nearly over head. It was also hotter than stink. Here are a few images, made with either DA 15 or DA 40, of some of the weaponry aboard. I plan another expedition to the Texas in about six months, when the sun will produce better light and less heat.

Nice shots Jer, I esp like the first B&W and #4 with its "in your face" symmetry.
I have to say that I envy you in the winter, but that changes just about this time of year.

Thanks much. And, yeah, I'm really enjoying the DA 15.

Thanks, Salty - I always appreciate your comments. And you're right - right now I'm envying you!

I appreciate your kind words, Paul. Believe it or not, the second one made me think of a B&W shot of a building you took some time ago; your image and mine both remind me of an Emperial Cruiser in Star Wars (which - if my memory isn't failing - I commented on at the time of your posting).

Cool ship, though it seems more like a WWII ship than a WWI ship...probably upgraded?

It was upgraded continuously, based on what I've read. But if you look at the reverse prow (front), the tumble home of the sides and the guns mounted along the sides, you can see that it originally a "dreadnought" class - perhaps the last one of its kind.

Nice series, I like the B&W shot best. I've been on the battleship Massachusetts and it's a much lighter shade of grey, I was surprised at how dark the Texas is! Now you've got me thinking about heading down to see the Massachusetts with camera in hand.

Great shots of a grand ol' lady (one you don't want to mess with)...

My first date with the wife was a road trip from Biloxi to go see the USS Alabama, when we were both newbie USAF butterbars at Keesler AFB (comm school). Poking around a warship gives you a great respect for her crew. Not to mention the history she holds...

As soon as I can find a sailmaker with a big enough loft

Thanks for the nice words, Dave. I'll do some more B&W conversions as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks much. I visited the Massachusetts when I lived in Boston (actually, Watertown) during the early '70's - I'd love to see it again. You New England guys have great nautical photo opportunities - the Massachusetts, Old Ironsides, Newport, Mystic Seaport . . . . .

The USS Alabama is a fantastic exhibit - at least it was in '78 when we visited. Interestingly, when I saw the Massachusetts (see above), I was an Army butterbar.
