Quinceañera (Sweet 15)
Posted By: ismaelg, 06-18-2009, 04:15 AM

In our latin culture, a girl's 15th birthday is very special. Similar concept to the "sweet 16" but in our culture it is as big and sometimes bigger a deal than a wedding. It is not uncommon to start talking about it when a girl is born.
My niece turned 15 last Sunday and guess who was assigned the task of taking pictures.
This was a perfect time to try my new "studio" budget equipment. Basically a 2 umbrella strobe set. I don't have a proper background yet, so I bought the biggest piece of cloth I could get. I wanted it to be gray, but all I found was blue.
The main problem I had was that there was not enough space and the lights were too close for my liking. But it was a good exercise.
At the end I took about 200 pictures and narrowed it down to about 50 so she can pick her favorite 10-12 for a nice album.
I also took some pictures with my trusty K-1000, the same camera I used when she was born..... Those are still in process.
Most important lesson learned: I don't know a thing about posing. I need to work on that. Also fighting shadows with proper lighting remains the top goal.
Here are some samples. Let me know what do you think:
BTW: The dress was very bright white and glossy. Quite a challenge to meter properly.

This is the setup. As guests arrived the lights had to be placed even closer.

Ring ceremony.

Shoes ceremony where dad changes the slippers to high heels.

My in laws with all their grandkids. (The girl with the green dress and the boy with the blue stripes tie are my kids)

Don't forget this is a birthday party!

You may be growing fast, but you will always be daddy's little girl......
