Portrait newbie (prom)
Posted By: bwield, 06-20-2009, 06:52 PM

My younger sisters prom and so I thought it a good opportunity to try my hand at portrait photography. From the day the "Head shots" were the ones I was most happy with.
I really have never done alto of people photography, but after this day I can see the appeal.
It's the expressions and feelings that you try to catch, and I much more enjoy the candid aspect of portrait shooting rather than the set - up variety.

Here are a few, most of the processing was inspired by a forum member whose work I really enjoy.

Any comments and or criticisms are appreciated as I am looking to improve.
All shots with DA* 50-135 / K20D / 360 flash

Nice effort.
I like the high-key approach in #1 (personal preference) though all are quite appealing.
The tight cropping is good to mix up with some half-body shots.
Lighting's the biggest challenge here - all of these are reasonably well exposed but the light 'quality' could be improved. I assume you used the 360 on the hotshoe the whole time. You could try some off-camera bounce or diffused flash to bring out more texture and create a different mood. Fill flash balanced with ambient light works well.

Overall, well done.

My comments are based on personal preference and more as a daddy who has done same to send his daughters off to proms than as an experienced portrait photog. OK, that out of the way, I found all 4 appealing from facial expression, I liked the "high-key" as Ash just taught me its called, especially in #1, #2 made me smile when I first saw it. The color pics I wondered why I DIDN't like as much until I copied into PS and dropped the saturation on #2 a bit then it suddenly looked like a younger girl going to the prom to me. Something about the color in #3 I can't put my finger on that does not look quit natural to me but again, I am far from a portrait pro.

She is very lucky to have a brother to put together some hi quality shots that she can pull out and look at years from now.
