My first try with the K200!
Posted By: jasonz, 06-21-2009, 12:00 AM

Went on vacation to St Augustine FL last week and finally got to give my K200 a workout! All in all I'm happy with the pictures I took. The last day of the trip I tried to get a nice family portrait on the beach but the shots just didn't turn out as good as I hoped for. Harsh lighting and poor planing were mostly to blame I think. Anyway, here are a few that I liked. Please tell me what you think and how I might do better. The first three are with the kit lens and the last two are with a $10.00 50mm f2 (thanks Bo!)

Thanks for looking,
Jason

Thanks for sharing these Jason.
Good memories.
A little dark overall, though, except for #2.
Enjoy your cam.

I can imagine what the girl was saying in photo #2.

Dad! It's only a dollar
Mom says that every girl needs more than that. Stop being such a cheap skate, and hand over that credit card

The central composition works extremely well on #2, but not so much on the other pictures. Try moving your subjects more to the side. Also, try using that 50mm F2 alot, I found using manual primes greatly improved my abilities as a photographer.

Thanks for the comments! Yes #2 is a priceless expression. Just to set the record straight, her grandmother was the cheapskate I had to make up the difference! lol

As to the under exposed shots, does the K200 tend to under expose or was it something I had set wrong? I believe those shots were in Av mode. Was I metering in the wrong area?

Thanks again for the comments,
Jason

I think the kitlens is to blame for the underexposure, if I'm not mistaking every DA18-55 does this.

Sure, that's what everyone says
I imagine that she gets everything she needs, any anything on top is really a bonus these days.

I don't have the K200, however my K100 is pretty much spot on in most cases.
Even with the Kit lens, so I wouldn't go balaming that.

None of the photos are bad, they just need a little tweeking. If you try your hand at post processing you might be pleasantly suprised by the outcome.

Edit,
For the record the exposures look almost spot on to me, on my work monitor.
Since it's calibrated with our (Fuji Frontier minilab) printer I don't think that I'd change a thing... other than playing with the contrast a little.
In my opinion, the darker exposure just adds to the atmosphere.

It looks like you're off to a good start. Beyond what the others have said about the underexposure, the only other thing I would suggest that you try the next time around is to go vertical with the camera and shoot your kids in portrait view, assuming that they're still.

Thanks again everyone for the comments! I am definitely learning a lot both from shooting more pics and from reading here. The only thing that kinda bums me out right now is that my snapshots seem to turn out better in just about every way than the shots that I take my time on. I keep telling myself that I'm still quite new to photography and it will come with time. I've made a few contacts around town with some semi-pro photogs and plan on tagging along on a few shoots to learn more about composition and lighting.

All I can really say is that I really like my new hobby. Unlike my other pastimes, this one can include the whole family and at the same time record the fun we have along the way.

Thanks again,
Jason
