Glossy Ibis (bird snapshots)
Posted By: heliphoto, 06-21-2009, 09:39 AM

I stopped briefly at the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge on my drive to work yesterday, and was shooting dragonflies (more on that in a future post), when I heard these guys approaching very close, hidden behind some grass. Soon they moved slightly off shore and I was able to snap a few shots before they noticed me and made their escape... I should have stopped down more to get some DOF, but I had only seconds to get a few shots, and I just went with the settings already set.

Both shots with the K20D and the Tamron SP AF 70-200mm @ 200mm with the Pentax-F 1.7x TC.

ISO 640 | f/8 (equiv.) | 1/2000 sec.

I love the second shot. DOF works nicely here.

Second shot is a keeper. Those pesky birds always flying off when you dont want them to.

Thanks Scott. If they'd just given me a few more seconds to configure, I might have got a better shots of their departure ...

I think these are nice. I never see the glossy Ibis around here, would love to have the opportunity to shoot one.

Thanks pingflood. Googling "glossy ibis pahranagat" I get the impression that they only recently have been found here in this southern Nevada wetland.
