Got me! I don't know for sure but I think the name probably stems from the early exploration of this area. Here in Washington State, there are only 2 year-round corridors through the Cascade Mountains. Back around 1900, western settlement was increasing and the railroads were looking for routes through the mountains to connect the Puget Sound with the rest of the state (and country).
The creek is located in the general area where the railroad finally did punch through the mountains so I'm guessing that this creek/area was one of their failed routes & explorations..
