Macros of Assassins (killers)
Posted By: Marc Langille, 06-27-2009, 09:46 AM

Crab Spider:

Harvestman carrying Ladybug prey:

Harvestman are related to spiders, but have no venom. They belong to the Arachnid class, but the closest relatives are mites or scorpion family (disputed).

Harvestman extracting "nutrients":

Cicada Killer:

Cicada killer wasps (the genus Sphecius speciosus) are large, solitary, ground dwelling, predatory wasps. They are so named because they hunt cicadas and provision their nests with them, after stinging and paralyzing them. Normally the females hunt Cicadas and are the larger than the males. This insect was quite large! This one was almost 2 inches in length.

I hope you enjoy them!

Regards,
Marc

Pretty gross creatures, Marc.

But the pictures are spectacular nonetheless.

#2 reminds me of that spider in Lord of the Rings. I know he doesn't look similar but it just does, I think because he's carrying a prey Great shots Marc!

Marc they're great shots. I just said they're gross creatures because I'm a little creeped out by bugs. But the shots themselves are wonderful, as always.

Thanks Jer - those wasps are actually very tame around humans. Evidently only the females can sting, since they bring the cicadas to the nest.

Marc, way to make my toes curl right before going to bed! Fantastic shots though - the detail is phenomenal! Might I ask, what lens are you using?

Thank you xhanatos! Lens used was the FA* 200/4 macro - most of these are cropped a bit due to distance to the subject. Light source was the AF540 flash with Sto-Fen diffuser.

Regards,
Marc
